Maurice, please let us know if this fixes the problem. It should because, if I remember correctly, dynamic registration with the listener doesn't happen until the database is mounted. That's probably not the right terminology. The effect is, the listener doesn't pass connections to an instance using dynamic registration until the instance is in mount state.
So, since duplicating a database with rman requires the auxiliary to be nomount, you're stuck with either running rman from the auxiliary server (and using a local connection) or putting a static entry in listener.ora as Justis suggests.
As you said: >rman target / catalog rman/rman@(protected) auxiliary sys/PASSWORD@(protected) >makes the problem. Setting the ORACLE_SID to STANDBY( alias in the >tnsnames) and using >rman target / catalog rman/rman@(protected) auxiliary sys/password >works for the connection ! RMAN says:
The first doesn't work because rman is trying to go through the listener, and the second does work because it is bypassing the listener with a local connection.
